Florence B. Price and the Long Struggle for Civil Rights:
How One Family Set the Stage for Classical Music Stardom
The Hayes School of Music welcomes Vanderbilt University's Douglas W. Shadle to Schaffel Recital Hall. Dr. Shadle is a renowned expert on the composer Florence B. Price (1888-1953), and will be presenting some of his research on Price and her legacy.
Douglas W. Shadle is an Associate Professor of Musicology at the Vanderbilt University Blair School of Music. He is the author of Orchestrating the Nation: The Nineteenth-Century American Symphonic Enterprise (Oxford, 2016) and Antonín Dvorák’s New World Symphony (Oxford, 2021). He is currently writing a biography of pioneering African American composer Florence B. Price for Oxford University Press’s Composers Across Cultures series.
