DESCRIPTION:Music students and the public are invited to instrumental and v
 ocal workshops with Artist-in-Residence Dr. D. Zisl Slepovitch on Sunday\,
  Aug. 30 from 1–3 p.m. (songs) and 4–6 p.m. (klezmer music) in room 21
 4 of the Broyhill Music Center. No cost or registration is required to att
 end. \n\nWorkshop 1: For Singers and Instrumentalists1:00-3:00 PM\n\nYiddi
 sh Songs and Niggunim: When Words are Not Enough\n\nExplore the expressive
  world of Yiddish songs and niggunim (wordless melodies). This interactive
  workshop invites singers and instrumentalists into a shared musical space
  where melody communicates what words cannot. Participants are encouraged 
 to sing and\, if they play an instrument\, to bring it along.\n\nLearning 
 materials (handouts – song / melody charts with suggested chord symbols)
  will be provided by the instructor. Materials for both workshops can be p
 reviewed in this Google Drive folder. \n\nPrerequisites: Helpful but not r
 equired to take this workshop are sight-reading skills\, and vocal and ins
 trumental abilities.\n\nWorkshop 2: For Instrumentalists4:00–6:00 PM\n\n
 Klezmer Treasures from Belarus and Ukraine\n\nDiscover the rich heritage a
 nd soulful melodies of klezmer music from Belarus and Ukraine. This worksh
 op explores traditional forms and their cultural significance\, offering p
 articipants a deep dive into the sounds and stories of Eastern European Je
 wish musical expression. \n\nLearning materials (melody charts with chord 
 symbols) will be provided by the instructor. Materials for both workshops 
 can be previewed in this Google Drive folder. \n\nPrerequisites: Helpful b
 ut not required to take this workshop are sight-reading skills (highly rec
 ommended though) and instrumental abilities (at least intermediate level).
 \n\nAbout the ResidencyInternationally acclaimed musician\, scholar\, and 
 educator D. Zisl Slepovitch will serve as an Artist-in-Residence at Appala
 chian State University from Friday\, Aug. 28\, through Sunday\, Aug. 30\, 
 2026. The three-day residency\, presented by App State’s Center for Juda
 ic\, Holocaust\, and Peace Studies\, App State’s Hayes School of Music\,
  and the Temple of the High Country\, with generous support from the Nadiv
  Funders of Western North Carolina\, is free and open to the public.\n\nSl
 epovitch\, a native of Minsk\, Belarus\, is a New York–based multi-instr
 umentalist\, composer\, conductor\, and Yiddish educator who holds a Ph.D.
  in musicology from the Belarusian State Academy of Music. He is Musician-
 in-Residence at Yale University’s Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust 
 Testimonies and a founding member of the critically acclaimed klezmer ense
 mbles Litvakus and the Zisl Slepovitch Ensemble. His work spans teaching a
 ppointments across North America and Europe and contributions to theater\,
  film\, and television\, including Defiance\, Eternal Echoes (Sony Classic
 al)\, Rejoice (PBS)\, and Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish (off-Broadway).\n
 \nSlepovitch’s residency explores Holocaust testimony\, Yiddish music\, 
 and cultural memory through a series of public events. Participants will e
 ngage with poems and songs preserved in Holocaust survivor testimonies and
  learn about their historical and cultural significance. The program inclu
 des a public presentation\, a concert performance\, and instrumental and v
 ocal workshops.\n\nThe residency begins Friday\, Aug. 28\, at 6:30 p.m. wi
 th a public presentation at the Temple of the High Country\, located at 10
 43 West King Street in Boone.\n\nOn Saturday\, Aug. 29\, at 4 p.m.\, Slepo
 vitch will perform Songs from Testimonies: Music from the Fortunoff Video 
 Archive for Holocaust Testimonies in Rosen Concert Hall in App State’s B
